CULTURE NEWS

  • On Monday night, the St. Augustine City Commission voted to shorten Nights of Lights to run from Nov. 15 to Jan. 11 (seven days shorter than last year) after months of debate that included concerns from local business leaders. Local leader Len Weeks, who helped start the event, expressed worries the change may affect the festival’s economic impact.  First Coast News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a March 10 meeting, the St. Augustine City Commission considered ending Nights of Lights early on Jan. 4 due to heavy traffic and planned road construction. Tourism leaders and local business figures warned the change will hurt the local economy (by reducing the season's visitor flow).  First Coast News
  • St. Johns County launched its first strategic plan for 2024–29 that sets six priorities to enhance community trust, well-being, economic growth, conservation, public infrastructure and organizational excellence. The plan was developed with public input and will use new planning software to guide resource allocation and ensure accountability.  The St. Augustine Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • Army veteran Melissa Assaf said Veterans Treatment Court helped turn her life around after she overdosed in a car in St. Augustine on Aug. 9, 2023—she has been sober since that night. She credited Judge Floyd’s tough but kind approach with helping her overcome her struggles and reunite with her children.  First Coast News
