COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NASA launched its Artemis II rocket (6:35 p.m. on April 1) from Kennedy Space Center, sending four astronauts on a 10-day orbit around the moon. Local residents along the Space Coast saw the bright launch lighting up the sky.  The St. Augustine Record

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Adventure Landing’s St. Augustine park will permanently close on Sunday, Apr. 12. The amusement park built in 1999 will shut its doors after its lease was not renewed following a $3.6 million property sale — guests with tickets, vouchers, tokens or gift cards are encouraged to redeem them before closing.  The St. Augustine Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • Archaeologists have unearthed rare artifacts from segregated Black schools and will host a public meeting on Monday, April 20 at 5 p.m. at the Willie Galimore Center (399 Riberia St.) to gather community input for a traveling exhibit funded by a state grant.  The St. Augustine Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews are installing a bioswale on Court Theophelia for stormwater improvements & flood reduction ahead of hurricane season, while work on a retaining wall on Inlet Drive and an elevated seawall by the marina is expected to finish by June 30.  First Coast News
  • State officials warn that despite heavy rains, Florida remains in extreme drought that affects millions and sets up a peak wildfire season for April, May and June. Several counties have imposed burn bans to reduce fire risks for communities including our area.  The St. Augustine Record
  • Colorado State University forecast for the 2026 hurricane season shows 13 named storms (six hurricanes with two potentially major) beginning June 1, with a 74% chance of a storm passing within 50 miles of Florida's coast. Experts say residents should prepare despite a slightly below normal outlook.  The St. Augustine Record
  • St. Augustine will host an Earth Day recycle event on Friday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Solid Waste Facility (601 Riberia St.; cooking oil at 501 Riberia St.) where residents can shred documents, recycle electronics, and dispose of used cooking oil.  The St. Augustine Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida's minimum wage for non-tipped workers will reach $15 on Sept. 30 as part of a constitutional amendment passed in 2020, and tipped wages will adjust accordingly with future increases tied to inflation.  The St. Augustine Record
