ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A sargassum seaweed bloom has begun to appear along beaches from St. Augustine to the Keys, and local officials (FWC and DEP) are monitoring its low risk impact for today as its rotting state may cause odors and mild irritation for some visitors, though open areas dilute the emissions.  The St. Augustine Record
  • A wildfire (the Railroad Fire) burning across 4,100 acres in Clay and Putnam counties is 50 percent contained and causing road and marine closures near the St. Johns River; residents are urged to stay alert and prepare for potential evacuation until seasonal rains return.  First Coast News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill proposing to change the Endangered Species Act is scheduled for debate today, and conservation groups worry it may favor industry. Terran McGinnis, a St. Johns County project coordinator, flew to Washington DC this week to urge lawmakers to keep the law intact.  First Coast News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Flagler College’s women’s golf team rallied on the final day to win the Peach Belt title by six shots over Lander at the King and Bear on April 21 — it was the team’s seventh title and they will now compete in the NCAA South Regional May 4 to 6.  The St. Augustine Record
  • Vested Metals International hosts the charity Southeast Coil Classic golf tournament Monday, April 27 at Marsh Creek Country Club. The event honors John Mark Leach with proceeds benefiting local nonprofits and will start at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun kick-off, concluding with a reception at 5:30 p.m.  The St. Augustine Record
