CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Romanza Festivale of Music and the Arts will be held May 2 through May 18 in St. Augustine and will feature music, theatre, art and dance at venues such as The Waterworks — Memorial Presbyterian Church and Flagler College. - ➤ City archaeologists uncovered the moat of an 18th Century British fort during excavation on private property south of Lincolnville’s Bridge Street in St. Augustine. A section (15-by-36 foot) was exposed by mechanical stripping (in February 2025) and will be studied further by the City Archaeology Program. The St. Augustine Record

- ➤ Sargassum seaweed has been spotted on local beaches since March and experts predict record amounts will hit our shores this summer. Renewed flow from the Amazon after a drought is expected to boost the algae growth—though the Gulf Stream may keep much of it offshore. The St. Augustine Record
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents in St. Augustine are reminded that a REAL ID is required by May 7 for air travel and entry into federal buildings — first-time applicants must visit a DMV or tax collector office in person with the proper documents to avoid travel delays. The St. Augustine Record
- ➤ Gov. DeSantis may sign a new law that will make dangerous excessive speeding a crime; the law passed unanimously in the Senate (last week) and will take effect on July 1. HB 351 defines the offense as driving 50 mph over the limit or 100 mph in a reckless manner and imposes up to 30 days in jail or a $500 fine for a first offense (repeat offenders face up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine and a license suspension for 180 days to one year).
