Good morning, St. Augustine. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 1st of May.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center said today that its forecast cone will be about 5% smaller as better tracking now gives a more precise prediction of a storm’s center—officials warned that areas outside the cone are still at risk from wind, rain or surge and the experimental display will also show all watches and warnings. This adjustment aims to improve the clarity of forecast information during the hurricane season.  First Coast News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting May 7, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or a valid passport to board commercial flights or access federal facilities; Floridians without the proper ID must visit a license service center with original documents (look for the gold star on your current license).  The St. Augustine Record
  • Florida lawmakers unanimously passed a bill naming January 27 as Holocaust Remembrance Day (the law will take effect on July 1 with the first observance on January 27 if signed by Governor Ron DeSantis) to fight rising hate crimes and promote Holocaust education. The measure encourages schools to teach about the Holocaust and antisemitism to help address recent violent incidents.  The St. Augustine Record
  • The National Hurricane Center is rolling out improved forecast tools—such as a smaller cone and clearer inland warnings—for the upcoming hurricane season. Director Dr. Michael Brennan urged residents, especially those new to hurricane-prone areas, to assess their risks and develop a plan based on local hazards.  First Coast News
  • Florida lawmakers approved a bill Tuesday to require community water systems to remove fluoride and other additives — following Utah's ban last month and despite health experts' warnings — and the measure now goes to Gov. Ron DeSantis for review.  First Coast News
  • Federal Judge Kathleen Williams said that all local law enforcement must follow her temporary order to stop enforcement of a new immigration law that makes it a misdemeanor to enter by evading immigration officials—she will next issue a preliminary injunction. The state attorney general's office sent conflicting memos, but no further arrests have been reported.  First Coast News
