Good morning, St. Augustine. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 13th of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida House Bill 1105 lets high school marching band count as one credit in physical education or performing arts if students participate for two years—this change recognizes the physical effort in band work. The law will take effect July 1 if signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and also limits cell phone use while changing charter school and scholarship rules.  The St. Augustine Record
  • Twelve Florida students will compete in the 97th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 27 to 29 in Maryland as the event marks its 100th anniversary. Past champions like 12-year-old Bruhat Soma and eighth-grader Dev Shah will join the finals — a highlight for the state — with broadcasts set on Scripps networks.  The St. Augustine Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Beginning May 15, the National Hurricane Center will start issuing daily tropical outlooks that highlight areas with a chance for tropical development—forecasters may issue an outlook sooner if conditions change. The outlooks offer early warnings for hurricane season, which begins on June 1, to help residents prepare for weather hazards.  The St. Augustine Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Johns County mother Cindy Jenkins has put up a billboard near Tallahassee—urging Gov. DeSantis to sign HB 6017 to repeal Florida’s Free Kill law, which she blames for her daughter’s death two years ago. The Legislature passed the bill on May 1, and if it is sent to the governor before the session ends, he will have seven days to act—Jenkins hopes this move will help restore accountability in medical care.  First Coast News
