COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Augustine will host a wide range of planned events in June including Habitat for Humanity home dedications on June 2 at 883, 887 and 891 Josiah St+ an art walk on June 6, a fishing tournament at the Boating Club on June 6-7, and many other community celebrations scheduled throughout the month. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three friends were rescued near the inlet after their boat capsized on May 26th when the engine failed and water flooded the vessel — rescuers from the Fire Department, Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife Commission arrived promptly — and although they lost personal items, no one was injured.  First Coast News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida schools started summer break on May 30, leaving parents to decide when children are ready to stay home alone since no state law sets a specific age while experts advise age 12. Families in St. Augustine are encouraged to follow safety checklists and use trial periods at home—steps they may continue until classes resume on Aug. 11.  The St. Augustine Record
  • UF Whitney Laboratory hosted an Adult Day event on May 14 — local participants worked with sea creatures, matched DNA samples, and learned how marine worms regenerate at its facility on A1A. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House and Senate leaders agreed Friday on a budget framework for the 2025-2026 fiscal year that includes tax cuts, sales tax exemptions and debt reduction; conference committees will begin meeting Tuesday to discuss spending details for education, health care and criminal justice—lawmakers expect to pass the plan on June 16 so the new fiscal year can start on July 1. This deal follows a month of behind-the-scenes negotiations after failing to pass a budget on May 2.  The St. Augustine Record
