- ➤ Backyard astronomers in St. Augustine saw the Perseid meteor shower begin on July 17th and will watch it continue until August 23rd, with the display expected to peak on August 12th at up to 75 meteors per hour despite a bright moon affecting visibility. - ➤ On June 29, Emma Marine fought off Theodore Tundidor at a smoke shop off SR 206 in St. Augustine when he tried to steal merchandise and physically assault her—she managed to escape with help from a witness—and is now recovering from the incident. First Coast News

- ➤ The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will vote on a proposed three-week bear hunt in December (December 6th through 28th) that limits permits to 187 issued randomly across 31 counties and bans taking cubs and females with cubs in response to a growing bear population now estimated at 4,050. Public feedback and concerns about bear-human interactions have prompted a more limited hunt compared to the one a decade ago, with details set for discussion at the Aug. 13–14 meeting in Havana.
