Good morning, St. Augustine. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 24th of July.
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A low-pressure system just off Florida's coast is expected to bring heavy rain and possible flash flooding to St. Augustine and nearby areas over the next few days—NWS said it is unlikely to develop into a tropical depression near the coast but may strengthen in the Gulf later. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Florida lawmakers and agencies are working to let anglers fish for red snapper for more than two days by forming the House South Atlantic Red Snapper Task Force led by U.S. Reps. John Rutherford, Buddy Carter, Russel Fry and David Rouzer. The group says state management will extend the season as studies show there are more red snappers now — a change that could benefit coastal economies and fishermen. The St. Augustine Record
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Florida faces above-average summer heat with advisories and heat indexes reaching up to 115 degrees—experts say August is usually the hottest month with average highs around 82.64 degrees. Residents are advised to limit hard outdoor work, drink plenty of water, and wear loose clothing to prevent heat illnesses. The St. Augustine Record
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A research team confirmed only 22 Sears kit homes remain in Florida, as few were sold there because homes required basements that most Floridians do not use. Homeowners with houses built between 1908 and 1942 may check for stamped markings and shipping labels — clues that show a home was a Sears kit. The St. Augustine Record
- ➤ HGTV Dream Home on Anastasia Island sold for $2.2 million on July 17 on National Lottery Day—confirmed by local agents. Winner Marie Fratta sold the house to buyers John and Jane Pope—whose purchase marked a successful close after a relisting on April 21 with price drops. The St. Augustine Record
