Good morning, St. Augustine. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • First Coast YMCA provided swim lessons to over 400 children at Solomon Calhoun Center thanks to a $125,000 CDC Foundation grant—funding the Safety Around Water program to reduce drowning risks in underserved communities. The funding also allowed partnerships with four elementary schools to teach vital water safety skills—efforts aimed at lowering drowning rates among higher risk youth.  The St. Augustine Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The GTM marine turtle patrol in St. Johns County is coordinating with trained volunteers from Friends of the GTM Preserve and FWC to identify and mark sea turtle nests—volunteers also stake new nests, protect existing ones, collect data, and help hatchlings.  The St. Augustine Record
  • Record seaweed levels are covering local beaches with a strong odor as warm water and extra nutrients make the sargassum grow big (which may block sea turtles from reaching the ocean). Local experts said coastal areas face different risk levels as removal efforts continue.  The St. Augustine Record
