ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Late Saturday night near Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine, a 37-year-old truck entered an intersection as a 52-year-old SUV turned, causing a crash that left the man dead and the woman injured—Florida Highway Patrol investigators continue to look into the incident.  First Coast News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Most Florida counties began the 2025‑2026 school year on Aug.11 with some starting between Aug.12 and Aug.14, and streets are busy with students and buses. A new state law bans cell phone use during class time—while a sales tax holiday on school supplies runs through Aug.31.  The St. Augustine Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center said Monday morning that Tropical Storm Erin formed in the Eastern Atlantic near the Cabo Verde Islands with winds of 45 mph and a low pressure of 1004 millibars. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane—potentially the first of 2025—and updates will be issued every three hours starting at 11 a.m. as it could affect Florida by Aug. 19.  First Coast News
  • The National Hurricane Center says Invest 97L has a 90% chance of developing into a tropical storm soon and may become a hurricane by August 14. St. Augustine is set for very hot temperatures with heat indexes over 100 and a good chance of strong thunderstorms today and later this week—bringing rough surf along nearby beaches.  The St. Augustine Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three board members resigned from the St. Johns County Airport Authority Board after agreeing to pay $120 each so that dropped Sunshine Law violation charges allow the governor to soon fill the vacancies. Barry Newman, a board-certified aviation attorney, said he was extremely relieved to have turned down the job due to concerns about the board's lack of transparency.  First Coast News
