CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Students at Flagler College in St. Augustine said that conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University and that his death has weakened free speech—many worry that public debate may now be stifled. The St. Augustine Record
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Emerson Smiley of Oakleaf High School was selected to march in Macy's Great American Marching Band for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. She will rehearse with band members from 50 states and is raising funds for her trip — she hopes to have her family join her. First Coast News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After a Sept. 10 court ruling declared Florida's open carry ban unconstitutional, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said on Sept. 12 that deputies will no longer arrest people for openly carrying firearms except in restricted settings — property owners can still ban them, and the decision will become official on Sept. 25 if no appeal is filed. - ➤ LifeSouth Community Blood Centers in St. Augustine is asking donors to help local patients with sickle cell disease during September, recognized as Sickle Cell Awareness Month—donors of similar ethnic backgrounds provide the best matches for needed transfusions.
