Good morning, St. Augustine. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 27th of September.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • USA TODAY Network is launching a text message service to update Florida residents on hurricane alerts and essential resource connections during the 2025 hurricane season — the service encourages texts to 'Hello' to 239-241-6343 and is not an emergency line — so residents should call 911 for urgent help.  The St. Augustine Record
  • Invest 94L southeast of Florida in the Caribbean is expected to become a tropical depression today—if it strengthens, it may become Tropical Storm Imelda—and bring wind, rain, and storm surge to parts of the southeast U.S. coast early next week.  The St. Augustine Record
  • Hurricane Humberto strengthened into a hurricane yesterday and is predicted to rapidly intensify into a Category 4 storm over the weekend while forecasters monitor Invest 94L, which is expected to form a tropical depression near the Bahamas. The two systems may interact via the Fujiwhara effect—making impact predictions challenging along the southeast coast as residents are urged to stay alert.  The St. Augustine Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Johns County week 6 high school football saw Ponte Vedra win 35-9 over Fleming Island as quarterback Cole Rosendahl threw two touchdown passes—Bartram Trail moved into a district tie with a 56-21 win against Tocoi Creek. Other teams including Gainesville Buchholz, Creekside, Menendez, St. Joseph and Florida Deaf posted key performances, with Menendez set to clinch the district when facing Bishop Kenny on Oct. 10.  The St. Augustine Record
  • Florida high school football games last Friday had playoff implications as teams played before district play—St. Augustine hosted Columbia in a battle between unbeaten teams while key contests across the state set the stage for upcoming matchups.  The St. Augustine Record
