- ➤ Unusually high water levels have affected local beaches this week as a king tide and Nor’easter winds pushed water inland along the St. Johns River — conditions will improve next week when the storm lifts and tide levels lower. First Coast News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Commissioner Ann Taylor wore handcuffs during an October 7 meeting to protest a state law that limits local control over development—she said the law has handcuffed her ability to govern. County officials must now revise the rejected comprehensive plan by year’s end to avoid state intervention. First Coast News
- ➤ St. Johns County approved a lease for the new Florida Museum of Black History on the former Florida Memorial University campus in West Augustine—this starts a two-year contract with rent set at $1,000 a month. County leaders said that if enough state funding is secured, the lease will be extended for 30 years with up to three additional renewals. First Coast News
- ➤ Florida law prohibits anyone under 18 from riding in the open bed of a truck and requires secure seating for minors, with exceptions for parades, emergencies, or transit across agricultural areas.
